What’s written in the stars?

October 15, 2008 by Cheap One

Just thought this was very interesting:

A new survey by CareerBuilder.com might hold the key to your career using your zodiac sign.

What’s written in the stars?

Scorpio, Leo, Taurus and Cancer signs were the most likely to earn $100,000 or more per year while Aquarius and Capricorn signs were most likely to earn $35,000 or less, according to the survey, which included more than 8,700 workers and was conducted nationwide across industries.

Pisces, Sagittarius and Capricorn were the most satisfied with their current jobs, and Gemini and Cancer reported being the least satisfied.

Read on to see how key characteristics of different zodiac signs matched up with the careers survey respondents reported.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) Independent, humane, innovative, unconventional and visionary are all adjectives that describe Aquarians. Jobs suited for these character traits include astronomy, photography, aviation and computer technology. Aquarians who responded to the survey reported holding jobs in sales, military, engineering, mechanics, food preparation, facilities management and transportation.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Pisces are empathetic, caring, unselfish and spiritual, which combine well with healing or compassionate professions like health care, social work or philanthropy. Pisces in the survey are on the right track, reporting working in such careers as social work, personal care, IT and facilities management.

Aries (March 21 - April 19) Most Aries affirmed working in government, construction, hotel/recreation and education, according to the survey. As assertive, outspoken, confident and dynamic people, those choice professions should speak well to their characters.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Taureans are reliable, practical and honest; they are methodical and work well in teams. Additionally, these folks like jobs that deal with artistic or extravagant things. Compatible professions include jobs in finance, accounting and interior design. Nursing, engineering, law, marketing, public relations and higher education also fit the bill for jobs attuned to Taureans — good thing those are jobs they reported in the survey.

Gemini (May 21 - June 21) Gemini’s need a profession that keeps them motivated and interested — no two days at work should be the same. Gemini from the survey reported working such jobs as art/design/architecture, nursing and personal care, sales, law enforcement, firefighting and machine operation — all of which are right up a Gemini’s alley.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22) Cancers are energetic, kindhearted, imaginative and protective. Their personalities usually fare well in law, psychology, teaching or nursing. Survey respondents said they worked in government, legal services, advertising, higher education, machine operation, transportation and military, all of which are in line with Cancer personality traits.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) Leos have a true lust for power and leadership. They are confident, optimistic and charismatic — they have no problem winning people over with their charm. Government, legal services, art/design/architecture, engineering, entertainment, real estate and education, are all areas suited for Leos; luckily those are the professions reported in the survey, too.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Virgos are detail-oriented with a passion for knowledge and meaning. Careers that require accuracy and research are well-suited to these folks. Some professions Virgo reported in the survey included social work, sales, editing/writing and food preparation.

Libra (September 23 - October 22) Libras are diplomatic and sociable — they need human interaction in order to be happy in a career. They are also easy-going, cooperative and are able to reach a compromise easily. Taking all of these factors into consideration, Libras from the survey are on course as they work in government, social work, advertising, machine operation, law enforcement, firefighting, sales and education.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) Analytical, intuitive and resourceful, Scorpios are drawn to mystery and all things complex and abnormal. Occupations well-matched to this personality are in science, investigation or politics. Scorpios from the survey said they work in such careers as legal services, engineering, science, education, construction and skilled trades.

Sagittarius (November 11 - December 21) Sagittarians are spiritual, positive and ethical; they also love to travel and learn new skills. Editing/writing, marketing/public relations, entertainment, hotel/recreation, IT and military, the careers reported in the survey, are all fitting for Sagittarians.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) Capricorns are persistent, responsible and dogmatic; they thrive in positions of power and where you can apply your common sense. Capricorns reported working in art/design/architecture, nursing, science, IT, sales, farming and food preparation, which are all fitting to this zodiac.

How to prepare for the “Great Depression II”

October 13, 2008 by Cheap One

Sorry to catch your eye that way!  Based on the behavior of the markets today, we may now NOT be on the cusp of slipping into the Great Depression II.  Yes that is truly good news.

So what happens if we do slip?  Do you have a plan?.  These could be very scary times for many households as a period of economic downturn spreads throughout the world.  Food and money will be the key necessities that folks will be in need of during tough times.

Here are some ideas from the Great Depression

  • Always do the right thing, the golden rule that works in all situations.  This is not the time to take advantage of your fellow human being.
  • Take the time to take care of your family, keep everyone as healthy as possible.
  • Pay attention to all the details of any transaction you are making.  Ethics comes into play when food and funds are scarce.
  • Get to know the people with whom you are doing any business, again ethics 101.
  • NEVER borrow money without a clear plan for how you will pay it back.  Living on credit is a big NO!
  • Leftovers are worth their weight in gold. Great cooks can extend meals several days!
  • And plant a garden! (to feed yourself AND you will be helping with global warming at the same time!)
  • Your stock picks, a bargain yet?

October 12, 2008 by Cheap One

When the market plunges 5% in one day, lots of stocks might look like they’re on sale. But are they? Here’s a few steps to try to figure out the true values.
    • Step 1 Look at a stock’s forward P/E. This is the price investors are willing to pay for every dollar of expected earnings. Compare this ratio with that of the company’s peers and industry benchmark. The S&P 500’s forward P/E is 13.8. What you want to see: ratio lower than average but not too low (be cautious about P/Es below 8).
    • Step 2 Look at the trailing P/E, which is based on a company’s past earnings. It will show whether a stock was cheap before the market’s recent free-fall. What you want to see: ratio lower than industry average.
    • Step 3 Check the price-to-cash-flow ratio. This shows how much cash a company generates per share. It’s sometimes a more reliable measure of value than P/E because cash, unlike earnings, cannot be manipulated easily by accountants. Again, compare the ratio with the industry benchmark and peers. What you want to see: ratio lower than average.
    • Step 4 Look for stability. A company that isn’t highly leveraged (laden with debt) has a better chance of riding out the economic downturn. To find out if that’s the case, see the company’s balance sheet at The SEC’s Web site. Divide total assets by total equity. What you want to see: ratio of 2 or lower (10 or lower for financial firms).
    • Step 5 Read the news. No matter what the numbers say, a stock could be a rotten choice if, say, the company is embroiled in a potentially costly lawsuit. Not every stock that appears cheap is a good deal. What you want to see: no obvious problems.
